In November of 2003, voters in Ann Arbor overwhelmingly voted for Proposal B to create a Greenbelt around Ann Arbor (read about it in the Detroit News and see where it would be). The vote was 14,525 to 7,037. For details, see just how decisively the city voted for the Greenbelt. Also, See how the Greenbelt relates to local school districts.

The ballot for the bond which includes the proposed high school passed with 16,423 voters voting, about 10,900 to 5,500. This means that nearly as many people voted yes for the Greenbelt as voted at all for the school bond (how many more voters would have voted "no" had they been told of the site?).

Note:

  • The site for the school was intentionally left off the bond ballot.
  • It is known that the AAPS did not seriously consider alternative sites.
  • The proposed site is a unique natural site adjacent to the City, within the Greenbelt and a perfect addition to the Greenbelt plan.
  • Building the school on the site will encourage sprawl, going against the voters wishes of halting sprawl.

Why is the AAPS so intent on ignoring Ann Arbor City plans?
